Merlin’s Joe Brosseau and Eren Vanderiviere both pulled off last-lap passes for feature wins while Cottam’s Rob Quick made his winning pass coming around to take the white flag in a night of fantastic finishes on Saturday night at South Buxton Raceway.

Brosseau went from third-place on the last lap to the Winner’s Circle in the Schinkels Gourmet Meats UMP Modified feature, as he passed Clayton Smith, of Taylor, Mich. for second coming out of turn two and admittedly thought that was where he would finish.

But Chatham’s Brian Speelman, who seemed to have the win all but locked up as he led 23 of the first 24 laps, had to get on the brakes to avoid Wheatley’s Justin Mills, the last car on the lead lap, who spun between turns three and four.

This allowed Brosseau to catch Speelman and he carried the momentum out of turn four to win by the length of his front bar.

It was Brosseau’s second straight feature win but unlike last week when he had to come from the back twice, he only had to do it once this week as he recovered from an early-race penalty to pull off another dramatic win.

Vanderiviere was locked in a three-car battle with Grande Pointe’s Tyler Lozon and Merlin’s Steve Shaw for the final seven laps of the Windride Transportation Sport Stocks feature, which was shortened to 10 laps because of five cautions in the first three laps.

Vanderiviere was in third place heading into turn one and on the final lap but dove to the bottom when Lozon and Shaw both went to the high side and came onto the straightaway in the lead, and drove on to his second feature win in the last three race nights.

Quick’s hopes of pulling off a late comeback for a win in the Tirecraft Mini-Mods appeared to be over when he was slowed trying to get around the a lapped car, allowing fellow Cottam driver Denis DeSerrano to lengthen his lead with two laps to go.

But going through three and four and the white flag in sight, DeSerrano had to get on the brakes to avoid contact the last car on the lead lap.

Quick took advantage and got by DeSerrano before they hit the start-finish line and led the final lap for his first win of the season.

Chatham’s Greg Haskell was the only driver to protect a late lead as he led all 15 laps for his first UMP Late Model feature win of the season.

John Watson, of St. Thomas, took the lead on lap five and led the final 20 laps of the Can-Am Topless Sprint feature.

Tilbury’s Kyle Patrick finished third on the track but was awarded second, while Warren Mahoney, of Lefroy, Ont. was upgraded to a third-place finish.

Justin Martin, of Rodney, actually finished second but was dropped back to a fifth-place finish - the last car on the lead lap - for ignoring a black flag. His brakes started sparking heavily in the late laps, as the Can-Am official ordered black-flag for Martin’s safety, but the driver, naturally was hotter than his brakes at the decision.

The night of comebacks actually began in the four-car Bomber class where Ryan Bonner passed Jeff Schives on the final lap to win his third feature of the season.

The Patriots Sprint Tour comes to South Buxton this coming Saturday for its Canadian Mid-Season championship.
